King Crab 473ml is a microbial inoculant (beneficial bacteria) rather than a fertilizer. It contains multiple species of bacteria that colonize the root zone and can improve nutrient availability, root health, and nutrient cycling.

What the bacteria do?

Here’s a summary of the major organisms and their typical roles:

Bacillus licheniformis Breaks down organic matter, helps nutrient mineralization.
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Produces plant growth-promoting compounds and can protect roots from diseases.
Bacillus megaterium One of the better-known phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, making phosphorus more available.
Bacillus pumilus Promotes root development and can improve stress tolerance.
Bacillus coagulans Produces organic acids that may help nutrient availability and improve microbial diversity.
Bacillus azotoformans Involved in nitrogen cycling and decomposition.
Paenibacillus polymyxa Nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization, root stimulation, and natural antimicrobial production.
Paenibacillus durum Similar plant growth-promoting functions, though less extensively studied.
Pseudomonas fluorescens Excellent root colonizer; suppresses pathogens, produces siderophores that improve iron availability.

There are 11 strains, so the total concentration is approximately:

275 million CFU/mL (2.75 × 10⁸ CFU/mL)

This is a moderate concentration compared with many microbial inoculants, which commonly range from around 10⁸ to 10¹⁰ CFU/mL.

Application rate

The recommended rate is:

  • 0.5 mL per gallon (3.8 L)
  • Apply once per week
  • Safe up to 5× the recommended rate

At the standard dose, you’re adding roughly:

  • 137.5 million total CFU per gallon
  • About 12.5 million CFU of each strain per gallon

What to expect?

These microbes don’t directly feed plants. Instead, they may:

  • Increase phosphorus availability.
  • Improve uptake of micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese.
  • Stimulate root growth.
  • Improve nutrient cycling in soil or coco.
  • Help suppress certain root diseases.
  • Improve resilience under environmental stress.

Benefits are generally greatest in:

  • Soil
  • Coco coir
  • Organic or biologically active media

In sterile hydroponic systems, some of these bacteria can establish around the roots, but their persistence depends on factors such as water temperature, sanitizer use (e.g., chlorine, hydrogen peroxide), and frequent reservoir changes.

Overall, the formulation is broad-spectrum and includes several of the most commonly used plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), particularly Bacillus, Paenibacillus, and Pseudomonas species. While manufacturers often market such products as increasing yields, the strongest scientific support is for improvements in nutrient availability, root health, and plant vigor. Yield increases can occur, but they depend heavily on the crop, growing conditions, and whether nutrients or root health were limiting factors to begin with.
